ArtsLab- Program

You're a young artist.
You want to create new work.
You need a place you can call home.

Are you a performer, director, creator, producer, musician, writer, designer, multi-media artist? Someone with the initiative, passion and vision to make things happen?

ArtsLab is an intensive arts laboratory and one year residency. It gives six young people (aged 18-25) from across Australia the space, resources, training, guidance and connections you’ll need to experiment, create new work and prepare for a lifetime as an artist.

You can tailor your ArtsLab program to suit your creative needs.

Program
ArtsLab is a twelve month program immersing you in the life of an innovative arts community, a weekly commitment of around 15-20 hours. ArtsLab will be your new artistic home – you might spend even more time here.

Develop your artistic practice through the following four areas:

1. New Work
Got a vision? An idea you want to make happen? Over the year, you’ll produce your own piece of work – using Shopfront’s resources, a small budget and extensive artistic and production mentoring. Industry professionals will critique your work throughout the year as part of your development.

2. Performance Project
Always wanted to perform in something amazing? Work with cutting edge professionals to devise and perform in Shopfront’s annual massive production. In 2007 that was – A City of Shadows and Ice – building an ice city in Kogarah Town Square. In 2008 ( lost toy story) festival, an interactive multimedia festival running through the streets of Hurstville CBD with installations, performance, bands, sculptures, lanterns, visual arts and physical theatre.

3. Performance training and mentoring
Want to take your work to the next level?
+ Weekly training develops ArtsLab as an ensemble – establishing a common language in performance, invention, movement and connection.
+ Regular mentoring sessions with the Artistic Director and General Manager refines your artistic strategies, personal style and management skills.
+ Get fresh ways of working through specialised seminars in new media and hybrid technologies
+ Week long Master classes in text and movement
+ Managing one-off events and short seasons gives you industry experience in production
+ You’ll get connected and inspired by artists who are national leaders in their field.

4. The business of being an artist
How well do you know the business of being an artist?
Essential to your mentoring is understanding grants, writing real proposals and developing sustainable business skills – drawing on Shopfront’s thirty years of successful arts program delivery and networks.
