SHOPFEST NO# 1
Friday 3rd July, 2009

“Greetings, my friend. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future. You are interested in the unknown... the mysterious. The unexplainable. That is why you are here. And now, for the first time, we are bringing to you, the full story of what happened on that fateful day. We are bringing you all the evidence, based only on the secret testimony, of the miserable souls, who survived this terrifying ordeal. The incidents, the places. My friend, we cannot keep this a secret any longer. Let us punish the guilty. Let us reward the innocent. My friend, can your heart stand the shocking facts of grave robbers from outer space?” - Intro from Plan nine from Outerspace
The sky was turning dark as the doors opened at 6:30 for the YAK Events Committee's very 1st film night 'Shopfest' held at Shopfront as a fundraiser for future Shopfront projects and so with cheap entry fee and an arrangement of popcorn, mixed lollies, softdrinks and spiders served up by Felicity Eberhart at the bar, film viewers began to fill the foyer as flying saucers buzzed above our heads, laughs were shared as groups of friends met up and soon enough the doors open to strange alien autopsy restriced area with a spaceman(Sam Dalley)inviting the audience to take a seat and warning them of the strange events that would soon be uncovered. the films rolled on and in the 1st half there were an array of short local films some created by shopfront member and some others submitted or sourced, the B-Grade films ranged from strangley surreal and eerie to hillarious shocking comedies curated by Tara Morris and Clare Ferra, after the first halfs collection of audiences were compelled to move back in for the main feature, a true B-grade classic - Plan 9 from Outerspace.
Known as being titled 'the worst movie ever created' audiences were waiting in anticipation to see just how bad this movie really was and when David Kirkpatrick cued to rolled the movie they were not dissapointed, complete with string dangling flying saucers, cardboard cutout grave stones that just kept falling over, poorly performed characters with badly written/delivered dialogue and a airplane backdrop that consisted of purely two chairs and a curtain - audiences laughed hysterically which continued as the night came to an end, everyone seemed to leave grinning, laughing or even quoting corny lines as they left the theatre.
Featured local films included:
Mouth: a film about teeth, tongue, eyes, drain, mouth, see, sewer, socket, crotch, face. directed, written, shot by clare ferra; fan of long hot showers and georges bataille
